General Assembly Breakfast
Civil Rights Institute founder calls for "reconciliation in our world"
[6-16-06]

Odessa Woolfolk, a founder and administrator of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, told those attending the General Assembly breakfast Friday that, "God calls us to be agents of peace, justice and reconciliation in our world."

Speaking of Birmingham and its role in the civil rights movement, Woolfolk noted that the city and its experiences have much to teach the world about doing justice and bringing about reconciliation. She called on mainline Christians to do the same.     The full story >>

More Light wants more inclusion

A report on the More Light Celebration Dinner, held on Thursday, June 15
[6-16-06]

Michael Adee, field director for More Light Presbyterians, tells the story of a boy in a Bible study he was leading who decided he didn't care what the Bible has to say about homosexuality. The boy wanted to know only one thing: "Does God love me the way I am?"

After a few moments of silence, Adee answered, "Oh Randy, of course God loves you just as you are. If you have been with us and you don't know that, it's not your fault. It's our responsibility."

More Light Presbyterians works for the full participation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people of faith in the life, ministry and witness of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Adee was keynoter at the group’s national celebration dinner Thursday at General Assembly.

More Light Presbyterians handed out awards to these individuals and groups:

The Rev. Erin Swenson of Atlanta received the David Sindt Award. "Being a transgender can be a lonely way to live your life," she said. "There's no richer honor than to be honored by your friends."

The University Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, AL, was named More Light Church of the Year. The award paid tribute to the church's "lifesaving witness" to students at the University of Alabama.

The Middle Tennessee chapter was named More Light Presbyterians' chapter of the year. The chapter was credited with "creating safe places for all God's children. Our church and our world are more loving and faithful places because of your hospitality and commitment to justice."      The full story >>

Israel/Palestine conflict

Panel offers three distinct views on achieving peace in region
[6-16-06]

Under the backdrop of a carefully controlled and structured pre-General Assembly event, the often-contentious discussion on the Israel/Palestine conflict began with ease here Thursday morning.

About 200 GA participants gathered for three hours to hear three distinct views on achieving peace in the contested region, and to receive an update on the human-rights situation in Israel and Palestine.

Official work on the multitude of overtures related to Israel/Palestine will take place when the GA’s peacemaking and international issues committee begins its work June 16. That will be the first official opportunity – via open hearings – for people to state their views on the conflict, and how they think the church should respond.      The full story >>

This website has been created by a number of progressive organizations related to the Presbyterian Church (USA), with two main purposes:

1.  We want to share our concerns and views with commissioners and others attending the Assembly, and with anyone else who is watching from afar.  While some of our groups focus on one area of concern and others are more general in their focus, we are all committed to the wholeness of our world, which we understand to involve justice and peace and the well-being of all people; and we are committed to the wholeness and health of our Church and its witness and service in the world.

2.  We want to get to know you better and serve your concerns and needs in any way we can.  So we will invite you to share your views with us and with one another with any email responses or questions.  We'll invite your responses with links here and there, and we'll try to post those that seem to contribute to our conversations.  Just send a note now, and tell us how we can be helpful!
